Grammar Skills — Nouns

A noun can name a person, place, animal, thing, or idea. Common nouns usually name general people, places, animals, or things; proper nouns name specific ones and begin with capital letters. Concrete nouns can be experienced with the senses, while abstract nouns name ideas, qualities, feelings, or states. Collective nouns name groups, such as team, flock, class, army, or committee. Compound nouns are made from two or more words that work together as one noun, such as toothbrush, classroom, or football. Plural nouns name more than one. Some plurals are irregular, such as child → children and tooth → teeth. Possessive nouns show ownership or relationship, such as the girl's bag or the teachers' room. Countable nouns can usually be counted individually; many uncountable nouns are treated as substances, ideas, or collections that are not normally counted individually. If you make a mistake, return to the question, explain why the correct answer works, and try a similar example of your own.
